Smoking Birds

$175.00

Medium - acrylic on found paper

Size - 5x7 (custom framed)

The ‘Smoking Birds’ collection come from my Hawaii chapter. When I had little room or money to spend on my art and had to get crafty. I found this little booklet at one of my favorite shops @discoveryantiques on upper road.

The story goes that these booklets, each having its own topic, were mailed out to participating customers of a cigarette brand. With each new booklet topic came new color cards in your cigarette cartons. Collect all of your color cards and fill out your collector booklet (i.e. smoke more!) What a brilliantly evil marketing plan.

And here I show up a few decades later and find a whole pile of completed booklets.

This one being on North American birds. And it was beautiful! All of the booklets had detailed drawings and sections of info about each species, and needless to say, my smoker smoked!

Every colorful card had been collected from who knows how many cartons of cigarettes and carefully placed on their correlating pages.

I found the booklet to be so beautiful, and yet the marketing so evil that I knew just what to do. I bought the booklet and ran home to tear each page out of its binding and begin the transformation process.

Each page is delicately painting over in iconically bright colors and line work that emulates topography. And hence the name ‘Smoking Birds’.
